About this work
Two boys wear matching gold-patterned vestments trimmed in red and blue; the one at left holds a smoking censer on its chains and looks down, while the boy beside him holds a tall brass candlestick with a lit candle and looks directly out at the viewer. Behind them a framed icon of the Mother of God and Child hangs beside a dark red banner embroidered with grapes, above a checkered wooden floor.
Warm golden light models the embroidered fabric and brass in careful, smooth detail, with deep shadow in the surrounding interior giving the scene a hushed, devotional quiet. Brushwork is tight and controlled, faces and hands finished with academic precision, the palette built almost entirely from ochre, gold and muted red.
