About this work

Warm golden ochre and cream tones on the vestments stand out against a near-black textured background, with light falling on faces, hands and folds of fabric. Brushwork is loose and painterly, modeling form through value contrast rather than fine detail, and the concentrated light gives the scene a hushed, devotional solemnity.
