About this work
A small, barefoot child sits huddled at the foot of a massive, thick-barked pine, knees drawn up and arms wrapped around them, face buried and hidden from view. The tree trunk fills the center of the composition, framed by a dense screen of thin bare birches and pines receding into a pale, foggy distance, with fallen orange leaves scattered over green moss at the base.
Muted greys, browns, and lavender-greens fill the misty background, set against warmer moss-green and rust-orange tones at ground level. Light is soft and diffuse, texture built up thickly on the bark, and the child's small, curled form against the tree's scale creates an isolated, quietly sorrowful mood.
