About this work

Two rows of gnarled, bare alder trunks arch overhead to form a natural tunnel above a snow-covered path. Blue shadows cross the flagstones underfoot, a narrow ditch runs along the left edge, and the path recedes toward a pale glow of light at the far end.

Cool whites, grays and blues dominate, set against the dark umber of the trunks and warm flecks of reflected light. Thick, loose knife-and-brush strokes build up the texture of bark and packed snow, and the softly diffused light gives the alley a still, serene, wintry hush.
