About this work
A stand of slender birches and darker trees rises on a low spit of land at the right, its foliage catching faint highlights of green and ochre. Below, a calm pond fills the middle ground, mirroring the trees, a strip of pale sky and distant tree line almost perfectly; a dark grassy bank frames the water on both sides in the foreground, empty of any figures.
The palette stays close to muted sage greens, greys and soft violet-blues, with the horizon barely distinguishable from the hazy sky above it. Light is diffuse and even, suggesting the damp, washed air just after rainfall. Paint is applied in loose, visible strokes with textured impasto in the foliage, giving the whole scene a soft, breathing stillness.
