About this work
Eight figures - women and men in pale, lace-trimmed and floral-patterned dress, one crowned with a laurel wreath - stand close together before a red curtain and a wall of orange lilies. Before them a table holds a roast bird, grapes, pears and wine glasses; the bearded man at right wears an ornate brocade jacket and red rose, while the youth beside him holds a french horn.
Colour is high-keyed and evenly lit, with crisp outlines and dense pattern in fabric and blossom, giving a flattened, tapestry-like finish typical of a formal group portrait. Static poses, direct gazes and symbolic props - horn, wine, fruit - lend the scene a hushed, ceremonial stillness after the implied performance.
