About this work
A white masquerade face with a red-and-gold eye mask and painted smile is topped by a three-pointed jester's crown in grey, red and gold, each point ending in a gold ball. Below it, on a pale shelf against the deep blue backdrop, sit a gold-dotted black cap, a white spray bottle, a green bottle, gloves and a strip of cards.
The oil paint is built up in smooth, sculpted layers on the mask and crisp graphic strokes on the indigo backdrop, contrasting the glossy pale face with the matte dark ground. Cool blues dominate, warmed only by the mask's red and gold accents. Pairing a festive carnival mask with plain household items gives the still life a quiet, enigmatic undertone.
