About this work
A rutted dirt track runs between two rows of tall birches and firs down toward a wide expanse of lake water, with a low, dark island silhouetted on the far shore. A weathered wooden fence stands at left and the gable end of a log house, its windows shuttered, occupies the right foreground under a heavily clouded sky.
Cool greys and silvery lavender in the sky and water are balanced by the deep green of the trees and warm tan of the bare path, built up with visible, directional brushstrokes that follow the trunks and clouds. The composition's converging lines draw the eye straight to the water, giving a calm, settled village mood.
