About this work
A head is shown in profile against a dark olive-green ground, facing right with brow, nose, lips and chin built from firm strokes of warm flesh tone. Deep red and maroon masses above the head suggest hair or a wrapped covering, while patches of blue appear at the lower edges of the composition.
The palette-knife work is heavy and textural, with ridges of paint left standing on the surface. Warm ochre and rose flesh tones contrast with cool olive, blue and violet shadow, and the loose, unblended brushwork gives the profile a brooding, introspective quality.
