About this work
A young woman's head and shoulders fill the canvas, her reddish-blonde hair loose against a bright yellow ground. Her eyes are heavy-lidded, lips slightly parted, one hand raised to rest near her chin. A dark clustered mass at her shoulder reads as foliage or drapery rather than a clear object.
Paint is built up in thick ridges of ochre, coral, teal and brown, applied with a palette knife so the surface stays rough and gouged. Loose scribbled lines drift over the yellow background. The unblended, tactile brushwork gives the face a raw, searching, unresolved quality.
