About this work
Three close-cropped faces fill the canvas: a dark-haired man with a short beard on the left, a red-haired woman on the right, and between them, lower down, a fair-haired child in a white top with a red collar. All three look outward with steady, unsmiling expressions, their heads set against a mottled pale blue ground divided by a vertical seam.
Built from broad, angular planes of warm brown, ochre and rose against the cool blue background, the faces are simplified into flattened, sculptural masses with heavy dark contours. The stark frontal poses and muted, direct gazes give the group a quiet, monumental solemnity.
