About this work
A calm river bend is framed by heavy stands of birch and willow in early autumn foliage. A slender birch sapling with yellowing leaves stands in the foreground, a boat is moored at the right bank, and across the water a cluster of houses and a blue-domed church tower rise above the trees.
Soft greys and muted greens dominate under an overcast, diffused sky, with touches of gold in the turning leaves and quiet reflections on the still water. Brushwork is loose and atmospheric, built up in dappled patches that give the composition a tranquil, unpeopled hush of a countryside riverbank in early autumn.
