About this work
A small wooden stool holds a cluster of kitchen vessels — a squat red clay pot, a yellow crock, a blue enamel mug, a dark bottle and a wrapped white cheese — set outdoors beneath the bare, twisting branches of a tree. Behind the grouping stands a weathered wooden trestle or ladder frame leaning against a rough plank wall, with autumn grass and fallen leaves covering the ground.
Earthy browns, ochres and greys dominate the background, against which the pot's red and the mug's blue register as isolated accents of color. Light falls softly from the upper left, modeling the rounded volumes of the vessels with confident, painterly strokes, and the muted, autumnal palette gives the arrangement a quiet, contemplative mood.
