Friends

Three figures are grouped tightly at the center of the composition: a dark-haired woman in a purple floral costume on the left, a young woman in an elaborate cream-and-gold beaded gown seated between them, and a man in a white ruffled collar and diamond-patterned tights on the right. Behind them, ribbon-like swirls, a vase of pink flowers and a violet ground fill the space with restless ornament.

The palette is dominated by violet, lilac, cream and gold, with pattern treated almost as flatly as the figures themselves, echoing textile or costume design rather than deep space. Faces are lightly modeled while costumes are built from dense, jewel-like daubs of paint, giving the trio a festive, theatrical, close-knit presence.
