About this work
A young woman is captured in three-quarter profile, her head tilted down and to the side in quiet reflection. Loosely pinned brown hair frames her face, and a long double strand of red beads winds from her throat down over a plain dark blouse. The pale paper ground is left bare around her, brushed only lightly with white to suggest a soft, undefined space.
Warm ochre paper shows through as the underlying tone, built up with soft pastel strokes of peach, rose and umber in the skin and hair, while the beads are worked in deep, saturated red. Light falls gently across her cheek and brow, and the loose, blended handling gives the portrait a tender, contemplative calm.
