About this work
A wooden post-and-rail fence crosses the foreground of a wide, flat water meadow where a river has overflowed into shallow, branching pools reflecting the pale sky. Beyond the flooded ground, strips of ochre and green grass lead back to a line of bare and evergreen trees and low rolling hills on the horizon.
The palette is muted, soft greys, olive greens and warm ochres, under an even, diffused light typical of an overcast day. Brushwork is smooth and controlled in the sky and water, becoming looser and more textured in the grass and distant trees, giving the wide, quiet landscape a subdued, contemplative calm.
