About this work
A young woman's face and shoulders are rendered in loose black ink lines, her hair falling in tangled waves and a faint, knowing smile on her lips. Around her head, dozens of vertical daubs of yellow, orange, red and blue are scattered across the pale ground like confetti, alongside a tight scribbled loop of black line at the left and a looser tangle above.
The etched portrait stays sparse and graphic, built from scratchy contour lines and cross-hatched shadow, while the applied color sits apart as flat, blunt daubs with no blending. The contrast between the monochrome likeness and the scattered bright marks gives the sheet a spontaneous, playful energy, as though thoughts or sounds are bursting around her head.
